ROYALS AT WAR • 2020

DIRECTOR: Maud Guillaumin

COUNTRY: Belgium

RUNTIME: '104

SYNOPSIS: November 1918 marks the end of a world conflict that left 20 million people dead. The responsibles for the carnage are the monarchs. Empires are crumbling.

After the assassination of Tsar Nicholas II, European monarchies all united by family ties are terrorized by the communist threat. Fascism and Nazism seem to be the solution. Willingly or unintentionally, the European royal houses find themselves at the center of Hitler's political spectrum. September 1939, Hitler implements his expansionist aims. The Second World War is on. To save their country, to save their crown, the sovereigns must choose: to stay close to their people in the country occupied by the Germans or to go into exile, resist or collaborate. While for some the decision is quickly made, others hesitate. By naivety, opportunism or assumed collaboration, each monarch seeks the best solution for his country.
